Couples Counseling in Redmond & Central Oregon
Couples counseling
Licensed couples and marriage counseling in Redmond, for partners who keep having the same argument, or who have stopped having it at all. In person or by telehealth, with most insurance accepted.
Patterns, not just problems
The first session or two is about understanding your history as a couple, what has brought you in now, and what each of you hopes will change. Your therapist may meet with you together and briefly with each of you individually to get a fuller picture.
After that, the work is less about relitigating the last argument line by line and more about seeing the cycle underneath it: the way pursuit meets withdrawal, the moment criticism turns into defensiveness, the point where connection becomes distance. Alongside that comes practice: how to raise a hard topic without it becoming a fight, how to repair after a rupture, how to ask for what you need instead of protesting what you are not getting.
If one or both of you is also carrying anxiety, depression, trauma, or a substance use concern, individual counseling can run alongside the couples work with the same team, rather than being treated as a separate problem at a separate clinic. Sessions are available in person at our Redmond office or by telehealth anywhere in Oregon, Monday through Friday, 8am to 7pm.

You don't have to wait for a crisis
There is no single threshold that means “now.” If two or more of these sound familiar, that is a reasonable signal to reach out, not a sign that things have to get worse first.
The same fight keeps happening
You've had the identical argument about money, chores, in-laws, time, or trust more times than you can count, and it never actually resolves.
One of you has stopped bringing things up
Conflict avoidance can look like peace, but it is often resentment quietly accumulating. Going quiet to keep things smooth is worth examining together.
Trust has been broken
Infidelity, financial secrecy, or a broken promise does not have to end a relationship, but rebuilding after a betrayal is hard to do without a skilled third party in the room.
You're co-parenting through conflict
Disagreements about parenting style, discipline, or blending two households can strain even a strong relationship. Counseling gives you one shared framework instead of two competing ones.
A major transition knocked things off balance
A new baby, a move, a job loss, a diagnosis, or a death can change a relationship's footing overnight, even when both partners still love each other.
You feel more like coworkers than partners
The household still runs. The logistics still work. The emotional connection has quietly faded into the background.

No second clinic, no second intake
Sometimes couples counseling surfaces something bigger than communication patterns: one partner's drinking or drug use has become a source of conflict, worry, or broken trust. That is more common than most couples expect, and it does not mean you need to find a second provider. Because Rock Recovery offers licensed counseling alongside ASAM Level 1 outpatient treatment under the same certificate, the same team can bring in individual substance use treatment and coordinate it with the couples work.
Insurance & cost
Coverage for couples work varies by plan. Some insurers put it under individual mental health benefits, and others require a diagnosable condition for one partner in order to bill. We check your specific plan before your first appointment, so you know what to expect before you commit to anything.

Couples counseling FAQs
How do we know if we need couples counseling, or if this is normal friction?
Some conflict is normal and even healthy. The signal isn't whether you disagree, it's whether you can resolve it and reconnect afterward. If the same conflicts keep resurfacing unresolved, or the distance between you keeps growing, that's a reasonable reason to bring in a therapist.
What if only one of us wants to go?
This is extremely common, and it doesn't mean counseling won't work. Many couples start with one reluctant partner who becomes more engaged once they see the sessions are collaborative rather than a place to be blamed. Some people start with individual counseling and bring their partner in once they're more comfortable with the process.
Is couples counseling the same as marriage counseling?
They're essentially the same practice under different names. Couples counseling serves any committed partnership, married or not, including dating couples, engaged couples, and long-term partners who haven't married.
Can we come if one of us is also dealing with substance use?
Yes. Rock Recovery coordinates mental health and substance use care under one team, so couples counseling and individual substance use treatment can run alongside each other with the same providers communicating, rather than through separate, disconnected referrals.
Do you take insurance for couples counseling?
Coverage varies by plan. Some insurers categorise couples work under individual mental health benefits, and others require a diagnosable condition for one partner in order to bill. We accept the Oregon Health Plan, Medicare, and most private insurance, and our team verifies your specific benefits before your first appointment so you know what to expect.
Do we need a referral to start?
No. Call (541) 234-3081 or send a message through our contact page and we'll schedule an initial assessment directly.
