What to Expect at Your First Outpatient Treatment Appointment

Nervous about your first addiction treatment appointment? Here's exactly what happens at Rock Recovery in Redmond, Oregon, step by step, no surprises.

A warm welcome on the first day of treatment at Rock Recovery in Redmond, Oregon

If you've never been to outpatient treatment before, the first appointment can feel like the biggest step of all. Most people tell us the same thing afterward: "That was nothing like I expected." Here's what actually happens, so you can walk in knowing there are no surprises waiting for you.

Before you arrive

There's no homework. If you have your Oregon Health Plan or insurance information handy, bring it, but if you don't, we'll figure it out together. Come as you are. You don't need to have the right words, a plan, or even certainty that you're ready. Showing up is the whole assignment.

The first conversation

Your first visit is an assessment, which sounds clinical, but is really just a long, honest conversation with a counselor. We'll ask about your history, your health, what substances have been part of your life, and what you want to be different. Two things are worth knowing:

  • Nothing you say will shock us. Many of our counselors are in recovery themselves. They've sat on your side of the room.
  • Honesty helps us help you. There's no answer that gets you in trouble, and no minimum level of "bad enough" to deserve care.

The assessment usually takes about an hour. By the end, you and your counselor will have a picture of where you are and what kind of support fits.

Building your plan

From there, we build a plan together, not a one-size-fits-all program you get routed through. Depending on what you need, it might include individual counseling, group therapy, and family therapy, and it's shaped around your work schedule, your family, and your pace. If anxiety, depression, or trauma are part of the picture, our mental health services can be woven into the same plan, with the same team.

What it costs

For most people with the Oregon Health Plan, outpatient addiction treatment costs nothing out of pocket. We'll verify your coverage before your first appointment so there are no billing surprises, you can read more on our insurance page or just ask when you call.

The step before the first step

Every person we've ever worked with had a moment where they almost didn't call. If that's where you are today, that's normal, and it's exactly why we keep the first step small. One call: (541) 234-3081. Or send us a message and we'll call you, usually within one business day.
