Does the Oregon Health Plan Cover Addiction Treatment?

Yes, OHP covers most outpatient addiction treatment at no cost. Here's what that means in practice, how to check your eligibility, and how to get started in Central Oregon.

The Deschutes River flowing through Central Oregon

One of the most common questions we hear in Central Oregon is some version of: "I want help, but I can't afford treatment." For most Oregonians, that worry has a better answer than they expect: the Oregon Health Plan covers most outpatient addiction services, often at no cost to you.

What OHP covers

The Oregon Health Plan is Oregon's Medicaid program, and behavioral health is one of its core benefits. For members, coverage generally includes:

  • Substance use treatment, including assessments and outpatient counseling
  • Individual, group, and family therapy
  • Mental health services, from counseling to therapy for co-occurring conditions

At Rock Recovery, our outpatient drug and alcohol treatment accepts OHP, and for most members, services come at no out-of-pocket cost.

Not enrolled? You might qualify

OHP covers far more people than many realize, eligibility reaches well into working households, and enrollment is open year-round. You can check your eligibility and apply at one.oregon.gov. It's free to apply, and coverage can often begin quickly once you're approved.

If the application feels overwhelming, call us. We can point you in the right direction, helping people navigate the system is part of what we do.

What if I have private insurance instead?

For mental health counseling, we work with most major plans in Oregon, Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, First Choice Health, Medicaid, Medicare, Moda Health, PacificSource, and Regence, alongside OHP. If you're paying out of pocket, individual sessions are $225, and a sliding scale is available based on income. The full picture is on our insurance page.
